For more people to experience a good death, in addition to medical care, there is a need for a mindful, compassionate presence to ‘walk alongside’ and accompany the whole family – practically, emotionally and spiritually – during this sensitive time.

We will train you to fulfil this role while an individual makes this profound and important transition.

Those drawn to these courses include lay people with a special feeling for being with the dying, who want to support friends, family or colleagues. Also retired or ex-nurses, complementary therapists, counsellors, clergy or nursing home staff who want to develop skills in end of life support.

The 20-day training is both educational and experiential, with a strong personal development component. It is not highly academic but does include course work and short written assignments.

We cover themes such as:

  • understanding grief
  • emotional and spiritual responses to death
  • physical changes at the end of life
  • palliative care
  • increasing comfort and supportive therapies
  • rituals and practices within cultural and faith groups
  • socio-legal requirements
  • communication
  • the soul’s journey
  • spiritual and self-care practices.

There is a maximum of 16 people per training group.

Participants can take the Foundation as a stand-alone CPD course (five days in two blocks of three +two days) or build towards Part II (six days in two blocks of three days) and Part III (nine days in three blocks of three days) to complete the Diploma.

Courses are externally monitored and certified by Crossfields Institute and the full Diploma has been awarded the Crossfields Institute Quality Mark Programme. The Learner’s Handbook is issued to each learner prior to the course and our policies are available on our website.  The  five-day Foundation course leads to the CPD Certificate Introduction to a Person-Centred Approach to Death & Dying awarded by Crossfields Institute.
